Fogo lento was born from the desire to investigate the historical and cultural roots of our culinary habits.
A dinner to prepare, an Italian woman and a Portuguese man, a table and concepts such as identity and tradition are peeled and cooked over a slow fire to deepen their meaning.
R. Barthes writes that food is everywhere and at all times a social act, rich in social, cultural and symbolic meanings. When we prepare a meal, we can read the layers of the history of a family, a group, a nation. We read about the multiple contaminations and encounters that have made us who we are. We travel between the intimate and the Universal to understand how the most everyday foods carry our history. We observe the changes that culinary habits have undergone over the centuries and how this affects the way we live and see each other. In this work, a historical research on the origin of food is accompanied by an encounter with cooks and lovers of the cuisine of Porto and the Portuguese Minho region. A performance is born, in which the preparation of a meal is an opportunity to reflect on the power dynamics at the macro and micro level, which the kitchen hides.
COSTANZA GIVONE is interested in the meeting of the arts, to browse the boundaries that delimit the different artistic disciplines in both her work and training. She has worked as a performer and co-creator with the Zaches Theatre Company in Italy and with choreographers Madalena Victorino and Aldara Bizarro in Portugal. She realizes her creations since 2012, after a period of study and work as a performer. Her first one Salome lost the light was a finalist of the 2011 Scenario Award, while Fogo lento won the Isabel Alves Costa award in 2018.
