Presentation 2015

INCANTI reaches its twenty-second edition this year with new awards: a three-year acknowledgement by the Italian Ministry of Heritage, Cultural Resources and Tourism and a further one as European Festival of Excellence from the international jury EFFE (Europe for Festivals / Festivals for Europe). Thanks to the confidence of the Piedmont Region, the City of Turin, the Compagnia di San Paolo, the Fondazione CRT and the Municipality of Grugliasco and thanks to collaboration with entities as the Fondazione Teatro Ragazzi e Giovani, Onda Teatro, the Castello di Rivoli Museo d'Arte Contemporanea and the Museo Nazionale del Cinema, this new edition will be devoted to the relationship between Literature and Puppetry. Outstanding performances by internationally recognised puppet companies will include authors of classical and contemporary theatre such as Sophocles and Jarry, and for seven consecutive evenings, companies from Japan, Turkey, France, Germany and Italy, will form the main corpus of the 2015 programme along with the PIP and the special project with the Puppetry Department of the Hochschule für Schauspielkunst "Ernst Busch" of Berlin, a part of the city of Turin's initiative Torino incontra Berlino (Turin meets Berlin).
"Special Literature" is also in the CANTIERE project: "fresh contemporary writing" in the scripts developed by students of the Scuola Holden of Turin as result of the workshop Writing for Puppet Theater organized by INCANTI. Some of those scripts have been chosen to be staged by young Italian Companies selected for participation in CANTIERE; one of them will be well awarded with the possibility of participation in the festivals IF Off in Milan and The other face of theatre in Cagliari.
The guests and companies involved in INCANTI 2015 include Ulrike Quade from Holland with the Italian premiere of a visual adaptation of Sophocles' tragedy of Antigone written in 442 BC; Nori Sawa brings a work on Princess Kaguya, heroine of the oldest tale in Japan; Tiyatrotem will present a contemporary reinterpretation of Ubu in Chains by Alfred Jarry in the style of Turkish Karagöz; Controluce Shadow Theatre with extraordinary Swiss musicians presents a new French version of Swift's Gulliver. From France, the group Jeux de mains Jeux de vilains brings to the section for children, in Italian, an ironic adaptation of " Mr. Seguin's Goat" by Alphonse Daudet and "Peter and the Wolf" by Sergei Prokofiev.
In collaboration with the Goethe Institut Turin for the project Turin meets Berlin, the "Ernst Busch" Academy of Dramatic Arts brings a new production in collaboration with the Goethe Institute of Indonesia, and this will involve the Retrofuturisten group from Berlin and the Papermoon Puppet Theatre of Yogyakarta. Other groups from Italy in the programme are Reserva Canini (Firenze/Milano), Irene Vecchia (Napoli), La TurcaCane (Torino) and Pesci Volanti (Torino). The PIP, a "jewel of the crown" of INCANTI as an educational and productive project, is entrusted this year to Nori Sawa; with the title Flotsam Blues a group of Polish and Italian actors/puppeteers gathered for the occasion have been working during the summer and will offer the result of the workshop for the inauguration of the Festival on 6th October. The workshop of Shadow Theatre at the Castello di Rivoli will be held by the teacher from the "Ernst Busch" school Ingo Mewes, who proposes the title Be Part of the Realm of the Shades. Some of his students in Berlin will offer in addition a second workshop of shadow theatre based on the research and testing of digital tools.
