The opening performance of the eighteenth edition of the festival is a show with actors and puppets which sets out to "revise" the history of Italy in a light-hearted way, addressing an audience of adults and children.
A driver tries in vain to set in motion a large steam locomotive, a metaphor for Italy once launched into the future and now still in need of repair. While every trick is tried to fix it, the engine magically opens and reveals to the public Patria (Fatherland), called Patty, ready to celebrate her birthday with the driver as the only guest.
Among hilarious encounters with the Founding Fathers, literary and historical references, musical parodies and romantic love stories, the show follows a light-hearted journey through a century of Italian life, telling about the unification, the hopes, disappointments, and finally about the importance of knowledge of one’s own history.
Memory is a muscle and should be exercised, with perseverance and passion. And the theatre can do that..

Starting point:

"I hate the indifferent" said Antonio Gramsci. Those who remain indifferent keep their backs to the wall and let the others act. They don’t take part, don’t go in any direction, never first, never second. They never are. Sometimes they do not even look. Barely breathing, they just survive. The indifferent man neither rebels nor lives a passion, he does not create, he does not dream, he does not invent, he does not scream, cook, register or smile. His body is weak and he lacks brilliance. Because of that, I will not remain indifferent. I would like to gather courage and to choose a path, in my own way, with the few tools I have. A path, a direction. In order to do this I must train every day and I'm always afraid of not having enough time. In order to do this in the best way I need teachers and exchanges, examples, ideas, weapons. I look around, forward, backward, I take notes, I ask questions. I am looking for accomplices.

THE THREE ITALIES of Gianduja
by and with Marco Grilli

Gianduja’s Northern Italy is broad, then the country becomes narrow and long. Stenterello’s one is narrower than long and that of Pulcinella is short, bent..., but only if you look down.
We live in the same country and yet our perception of Italy is different.
We've joined up the territories ...but the people? 15 minutes to see if at least the Puppets have understood Italy and the Italians.

Shadow show without words. Music, pictures and sounds take us back to the games of childhood in a strangely comical world. The adventures of a girl who dares to put her life and her dreams in constant confrontation between the world of adults (the conservatism of her father, the rigidity of her mother) and the imagination of children. She despises the clichés of pink princesses and she has a bold hen as the only friend leading her to break out of conventional patterns.

Paulo Ferreira, Portuguese moved to Brussels, has studied illustration and comics as well as clowning. A lover of shadow theatre, he founded the Clair de Lune company in 1990. He brought to INCANTIE 2009 “the Cyclo théâtre”, a microshow which has been performed all around Europe.

in collaboration with Sistema Teatro Torino

The desire to become bigger, imitating adults, along with the desire to approach the world in one’s own way, manifests itself in children at different levels of awareness, according to age. These desires are recognized and reflected in  the adventure of growing up.

Since 1996 Onda Teatro has put its money on the communication skills of actors, dancers and musicians, on the emotions arising from their relationships and on the evocative power of sound, images and words.
An essential theatre making empty space into a place for imagination.
The company has collaborated with INCANTI since 2008 and this year presents this new production in the Festival’s section for schools.

Hôtel Crab is a comedy of human puppets full of surprises, passions and misunderstandings, a story set in Russia in a time that is not real or present. A dreamlike atmosphere, deliberately artificial to tell about a hotel where nothing ever happens and the arrival of a guest who breaks the monotony.
A story without words with rapid changes of mood in a plot very close to silent cinema.

Company founded in 1998, they worked at first with marionettes and then, over the years, gave place to performance with parts of the body, finally arriving to the creation of humanettes. The universal language of mime and the originality of the staging have led the company to numerous international tours. Truk i Trek has performed in over 20 countries and comes to Turin for the first time.

"...suppose enclosed within the walls of this dining room two terrible powers, threatening each other from opposite sides of a dangerous stretch of sea! The English invaders, settlers in Sarawak and the terrible pirates of Mompracem, avengers and paladins of the seas, led by the invincible Sandokan, the Tiger of Malaysia!
Make up for our inability to tell the story with your imagination. Make one man into a thousand men; create a mighty army with your fantasy. If we say ships, imagine  real ships, and watch them chase each other defying the fury of the winds"

The company Sacchi di Sabbia, founded in Pisa in 1995, has focused its research towards the reinvention of a contemporary popular theatre. Already winners of two ETI awards, they received a nomination for the Ubu Prize in 2003 and won the Special Ubu Prize in 2008. with Paola Bianchi, Raphael Bianco (dance), Alberto Jona, Jenaro Meléndrez Chas (shadows), Bruno Pochettino (light technique)

CONTROLUCE presents its new version of Aida which had its premiere last March at the International Festival of Puppet Theatre in Izmir (Turkey) during the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of Italian Unity sponsored by the Italian Consulate in Izmir.

This new reading of the opera through fragments of the psychology of Radames deriving from his condition of being torn between love and duty. This interpretation in an intimate key brings the opera back to the structural tensions intended by Verdi, in which the Egyptian world remains a kind of background, both evocation or tale and description of power.
Dance and light are the expressive media of the show: two dancers and their shadows, sometimes broken, distorted, partial, telling the tragedy through the eyes of a bewildered Radames.

The year 1864, Garibaldi scrutinizes the sea from his small island, his red shirt glows in the warm January sun. His foot still hurts in the tight brown leather boot. The wound to his heart inflicted by the King's army in the attempt to assassinate him on the Aspromonte still gives pain.
At the White House a special guest arrives. This time it is not one of the many admirers of the general. A disturbing figure appears on the horizon.

Gaspare Nasuto, puppeteer since 1989, is an ambassador for the world of the mask of Pulcinella, the Museum of Acerra, Naples.

CONTROLUCE’s erotic show returns one year after its debut, revised for the closure of an evening dedicated to shadows.
"... A cheeky and ironic divertissement in which CONTROLUCE introduces a world of eroticism in the shadows [...] a micro-show for just a few spectators each time, inspired by the turn of the century’s Cabaret and Burlesque. The stylized black figures [...] become then cheeky and light-heartedly "explicit", giving to the audience an amusing but by no means coarse interlude." (Laura Bevione - sistemateatrotorino.it)

Bola de Nieve: every dream in a piano. No one knows how many melodies and memories may be hidden in between the strings and keys of a piano, and no one even know how the truths of a life could be confessed through a keyboard of ebony and ivory,. Teatro de las Estaciones focuses the piano in which "Bola de Nieve," Ignacio Villa in real life, perhaps left some confessions. There once was a child of the village of Guanabacoa who loved music, simple games and his mother. All these loves became a single one: the piano, which in turn opened the door to other peoples and other loves. Por el monte carulé is a musical album of memories and visions inspired by the songs of this icon of Cuban music.

Founded in 1994 in Matanzas, the Teatro de las Estaciones is at the forefront of Cuban Puppet Theatre groups. Its work is directed towards the collecting of domestic and foreign plays, with audio-visual materials, theoretical presentations and workshops on the art of puppetry. It has received major awards at festivals and competitions in Cuba and has participated in international festivals of Puppet Theatre in Spain, France, Mexico, Italy, Venezuela, Denmark, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic and the United States.

LE CIRQUE ORPHELIN (ITALIAN PREMIERE)
staging, puppets and masks
South Miller
original music Christian Laflamme
manipulation Jacob Brindamour
mechanisms and structures Sylvain Longpré
with Jacob Brindamour and Chaterine C. Mousseau

"Le Cirque orphelin” is a clandestine meeting in a garden full of waste, oil cans, rusted metal and lost objects. Two street vendors tell the stories which populate their nightmares and fantasies with objects collected from the four corners of the city and create a "storehouse of dreams." In this kaleidoscopic frenzy, tableaux vivants take shape evoking the life of a company of battered misfits: a mermaid without a tail in a circus wagon, a caterpillar "stoned" on barbiturates, an agoraphobic clown and an old transvestite. This small circle is the refuge for orphaned objects and strange puppets. Rehabilitation or exploitation? Be ye the judge, Ladies and Gentlemen! "

One of the most expected companies of this edition of INCANTI, Les Sages Fous offers a Theatre of  Paradox, grotesque and poetic, ceremonial and mundane, where masks, puppets, objects and people live together. A theatre in which image and gesture tell more than words. A theatre that surprises and disturbs because wild and undisciplined.

How is a stranger made? What are his tastes?

GIULIO MOLNÀR (Hungary-Italy)
PICCOLI SUICIDI (LITTLE SUICIDES)
Three short everyday exorcisms
by and with Giulio Molnàr

In the late 70s of the last century, an international expedition of pioneers went into the world of objects with the intention of extracting material and studying its nature. A member of the team, who believed more than the others that he could  identify in the aims of this the possible subject of his own vocation, ventured too far into the unknown and is still missing. He is still there digging, among dying signals and forms that are ceasing to exist. He digs in different directions because the terrain is large enough to avoid touching the same point twice and the risk of recurrence.
The rest of the group returned from the expedition with a precious booty. Among the many exhibits there are also three archaeological fragments discovered and collected by him: The Trilogy of little Suicides. These pieces, according to reliable opinion, date the early history of Object Theatre and are a clear and fundamental testimony of the existence of this genre. A weird language in which the object is not camouflaged to represent roles or characters of human affairs but, accepting or trying to escape its objective function, it represents itself with surprising dignity. A disturbing nudity. The actor does not use objects to express himself, but helps them to tell about themselves.

A classic of Object Theatre, this was presented at INCANTI in 2003. Now it returns to the Cavallerizza Reale for the last chapter of this Festival dedicated to History, as a true historical record of a genre which is born and shapes its own identity in the same show.

A refrigerator comes to life: pictures, shadow puppets and paper figures explode from the appliance which turns into an opera house with even boxes and an orchestra pit among the vegetables and bottles. Animals, ships, mermaids, singers and fairground characters move to the strains of Wagner’s Flying Dutchman, Bizet's Carmen and Rossini's exciting music.

The work of Antonio Panzuto, appearing or the first time at INCANTI, surprising us with its simple formula and great vital force which sets out to seduce us with the lightness of its surreal mise en scène.

BREAD & PUPPET THEATER (USA)
MAN OF FLESH & CARDBOARD (ITALIAN PREMIERE)
(Manning & Truth)
with Peter Schumann, Maura Gahan, Gregory Corbino, Susan Perkins, Katherine Nook, Damiano Giambelli, Genevieve Yeuillaz.
directed by Peter Schumann
with the participation of students of the School of the Teatro Stabile of Turin

Puppet shows by definition are linked to fun or irreverent irony. However they can also touch burning issues usually hidden from the public or disclosed in distorted versions.
This show is dedicated to the brave soldier, Bradley Manning, who revealed the truth that it was forbidden to reveal and is now paying the consequences.
The show is divided into two parts: Modern Sky and Manning.

The Bread and Puppet Theater company was founded by Peter Schumann in New York in 1961. It has performed street shows using masks, puppets and figures of colossal dimensions, mixing music, dance, sculpture and happenings, and symbolically ending with the distribution of food to the spectators. From this experience comes the name of a group that understands theatre as a basic necessity comparable to bread.
The Schumann company, coming into contact with the protests of the seventies, became an active protagonist of a counterculture that crossed not only the U.S. but also Latin America and Europe with a passionate attention to issues such as Universal Peace and Social Justice.

INCANTI ends the 2011 edition with this special evening at the prestigious Teatro Carignano, where the Bread and Puppet Theater will present the only Italian performance of this new production.
